![]() Pairing up with his childhood friend, Josh Silver, in 1989 the duo set their eyes upon the up-and-coming Gothic genre and formed a new band called Repulsion. Yet, experiencing little longevity or success from these bands, Steele instead set his sights on a new, darker project that would follow a path unlike most on the scene. Steele quickly established himself as a bassist and vocalist in each of these outfits, utilizing his songs to address problems such as racism, misogyny, race, and war. Few people realize that the musician was a member of two previous bands before forming Type O Negative: a heavy metal band called Fallout and a politically incorrect Thrash band called Carnivore. Despite being a self-proclaimed atheist for the duration of his life, the musician's Catholic roots would return to him just before his sad death. ![]() The artist, born Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk, was raised in Brooklyn as the youngest of six children in a devoutly Catholic household. Behind Type O Negative's stardom, however, lurked one of the genre's most sad backstories, the full depth of which few were aware. Steele took the globe by storm with his haunting, baritone voice, vampiric visage, and unmistakable 6ft 8inch presence, and drove Metal into a new path with his sound. ![]() The Gothic Metal genre was pioneered and centered completely on Type O Negative leader Peter Steele, according to metal enthusiasts all around the world.
